rock & river

Expect to be energized and tired all at the same time.

You’ll stay on the move all week as you move back and forth between our rock climbing and whitewater kayaking programs.  Every day we formulate new Camper Groups so you make as many Camper and Staff friends as possible.  You’ll also get a chance to stick with the friends you have at Camp.  We love it when someone comes to Passages and does not know anyone else, they make the most new friends!  All week we will be teaching you Level I-III skills in our Rock and River Master Program.  On Thursday afternoon you’ll have a chance to meet 1:1 with our Staff to see how your skills have progressed.  One of our goals is to help you pass Level III when you’re ready so you can move on to Advance Climbing or Advance Kayaking Camp and prepare yourself to one day apply for a job at Passages.

Rock and River Camp

Passages has designed the “Rock and River Master Program” which confidently teaches campers fundamentals to advanced methods of kayaking, rock climbing and rappelling. The Rock and River sessions also include a 5 mile river trip and rides across our 350' Zip-line! The cost includes all gear, snacks and drinks. Come join us this summer, you’ll be glad you did.

Our counselors are highly respected members of the outdoor community who love sharing their expertise and appreciation of the outdoors with young people. We have a 4 to 1 camper to counselor ratio.

We are psyched for another great season and looking forward to working hard and playing hard with this summer's campers. Come to camp with your game face on and be prepared for some hard-core coaching and fun.

  • Please arrive between 8:00am & 8:30am for camp daily. Camper check-out begins at 4:45pm, but you may pick up as late as 5:30pm.
On Friday, pickup will be 4-4:45pm.

  • The drop-off and pick up for your camp is at Historic Tredegar & The American Civil War Museum - formerly Tredegar Iron Works - next to the Belle Isle parking lot. (500 Tredegar Street, Richmond, VA 23219)

  • • Wear a bathing suit and comfortable shorts and a tshirt (or rash guard).

    • Shoes: Wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet & dirty. We strongly recommend durable sandals (no flip flops) and non-cotton socks if you have them.

    • Bring a hydration pack or water bottle.

    • Please note the weather in case you need a hoodie/rain jacket. We are a Rain or Shine camp, so dress accordingly!

    • We supply drinks and snacks daily. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, please pack a non-perishable lunch and we will keep it in the shade and dry for you. We will have our traditional cook-out on Wednesday and Pizza party on Friday.

    • We supply all equipment including boats, paddles, life jackets, & helmets. (Feel free to bring your own.)

    • Come with a layer of sunscreen. We will reapply as needed throughout the day.

    • Please label all of your belongings.

Please do not bring electronics or valuables. They are guaranteed to get wet, lost, or misplaced.

  • If your child cannot attend camp on a given morning, please leave a message in the voicemail box at 804-972-0693. We ask that you try to avoid situations where your child arrives late to camp or must leave early, so that all our staff can remain with the entire group. In case of emergency or any other concerns or if you need to contact the camp director, please contact Julie Appleby at 804-897-8283 ext.310.

  • On Friday after lunch (1:30-3:30pm), we have our optional Friday Expedition. If you wish to join us, meet our staff at the American Civil War Museum parking lot by 1:30pm for walking directions to Belle Isle and Passages. You'll spend two hours in getting a taste of our camp activities. Wear some rough and tumble shoes and clothes for your expedition to Belle Isle. It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk from the parking lot to our sites. You should bring a water bottle too!

All campers will be walked back to the parking lot at 4pm on Fridays.

  • Unpaid balances are due two weeks before the start of your camp session. For your convenience, we will debit your credit card with the balance due. Thank you for your prompt attention to this.

  • Your comments and suggestions serve as our compass towards improving our program each year. Please complete our online evaluation form that will be mailed to you at the end of your session.
