OUR MISSION HERE AT PEAK EXPERIENCES
we believe climbing is for everyone
Since the day we opened our doors in 1998,
The Peak Experiences Community has enthusiastically shared its passion for climbing and made efforts to spread its arms wide so all feel welcome here.
Despite this, we acknowledge our own shortcomings as well as a significant underrepresentation of a number of groups within the Climbing Community. There will always be work to be done to ensure the Peak Experiences Community continues towards inclusion and equity.
What we’re doing
-
Over the years, we’ve worked with numerous local external groups and organizations to lower the barrier to access for BiPOC and folks from other marginalized communities. In the summer of 2020, we made a new pledge; to provide free and/or reduced-cost memberships to BIPoC or otherwise marginalized community members who need assistance to gain access to rock climbing.

Our adaptive climbing program at Peak Experiences works to break down barriers and promote inclusivity by catering to variations in movement patterns, providing assisted rope systems that we’ve designed, and accommodating individuals with both physical and invisible disabilities. By working towards universal accessibility, the program strives to ensure that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate and enjoy the sport of climbing. The program aims to expand beyond experiential adaptive climbing and include recreational and competitive climbing opportunities soon.

Why do we offer scholarships to Passages Adventure Camp?
The answer to this question is evident to all of the children and parents who've already participated in Passages: it is a life-changing and empowering experience we wish every child could experience at least once in their life. This may not be possible, but that is not going to stop us from trying to fund-raise money for as many scholarships as we can possibly offer. All donations are gathered by The Friends of James River Park and tax-deductible.
We offered full scholarships to as many as 24 deserving Campers every summer for the last 30 years. The Wood River Run is a 5k run / walk that takes place every year in April and generates the funds necessary to grant our scholarships.

The Vision for our company includes the cultivation of a space for a diverse Staff, where all are empowered to use their voice in open and assertive ways to effect positive change within the Peak Experiences Community. We provide training for all of our Staff, to create growth opportunities for them internally as well as launch their own careers.
Trust, mutual respect, and adaptability form a foundation for our creativity and innovation. A positive attitude defines an atmosphere of fun here at Peak. Our Staff actively participate in training to help them affirm and respect the widest possible array of potential climbers which is as you know, is everyone.

We have partnered with a variety of local organizations that share our values. You’ll see our staff volunteering at many of these organizations, often while the organizations are using our gym to operate.

The work isn’t done
Our journey to addressing the pervasive systemic racism and injustice in our country and communities is a long-term commitment. Our approach is centered around advocacy, education, dismantling barriers, forging partnerships, and proactive intervention.
We openly acknowledge that we do not possess all the answers. The path to achieving a fully inclusive community is complex and multifaceted. We may encounter missteps or encounter additional challenges along the way. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to contribute to the necessary change and foster safe spaces that embrace and welcome all individuals.
